9:00 – 10:00 am Breakout Session One

  1. Preservation Basics

    Cindy Tooker, AIA, LEED Accredited Professional, Leo A Daly Company

    Tooker will cover the basics of preservation, including common terms, the history of preservation and industry standards for preservation, as well as resources for preservation techniques.

  2. Arts and Crafts Gardens with Native Plants

    Kinghorn and Stevens will examine the characteristics of the period Arts and Crafts garden.

  3. Local, State and Federal Incentives

    Grant Landreth, Project Coordinator, State Historic Preservation Office

    Is there any way you can get money to help restore your historic home or business? Learn about ways to help make it easier for you to afford to restore a historic property.

  4. Window Repair: Repairing Window Weights

    Don Browers, The Old House Mechanic

    Browers will demonstrate the materials, tools and methods used to repair broken window weights safely.

  5. Porch Restoration

    David Lawrence, Craftsman

    Lawrence will discuss the techniques and materials you can use to restore and to repair your porch. Get tips on working with contractors and learn about ways to make and keep historic porches safe and enjoyable.

  6. Hands on Plaster

    Dick Grace, Grace Plastering, Inc.

    Join Grace in a hands-on demonstration of methods to repair historic plasterwork. He will demonstrate how to salvage loose and cracked plaster and how to prepare plaster walls for painting.

10:15 – 11:15 am Breakout Session Two

  1. History of Omaha’s Little Italy

    Louie Marcuzzo, Owner of Louie M’s (Burger Lust)

    Join Marcuzzo for a spirited look back at Omaha’s Little Italy in the 1940s. Learn how the neighborhood formed and matured and where it is today.

  2. History of Omaha’s Parks and Boulevard System

    Pat Slaven, ASLA Park Planner / City Planner, City of Omaha

    Slaven will discuss the history, planning and implementation of Omaha’s Historic Parks and Boulevard system.

  3. Small Commercial Project Group Discussion

    Jennifer Honebrink, AIA, Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture, P.C.
    Paul Nelson, AIA, Bahr Vermeer Haecker Architects
    Bryan Zimmer, AIA, The Architectural Office

    Learn from three architects on their experiences with small commercial development projects.

  4. Repairing and Painting Exterior Woodwork

    David Lawrence, Craftsman

    Lawrence will discuss the major causes of deterioration in wood and the best methods for preservation and restoration of painted wood exterior elements.

  5. Wood Repair Through Wood Consolidation

    Tim Christiansen, Craftsman

    Christiansen will discuss the materials and methods available to consolidate damaged wood using state of the art consolidates.

1:00 – 2:00 pm Breakout Session Three

  1. Omaha’s 20th Century Modern Architecture

    Carol Ahlgren, Architectural Historian, Commonwealth Cultural Resources Group

    Ahlgren will give an overview of Omaha’s mid-century modern architectural gems. From the House of Tomorrow, residential and commercial marvels to Historic Neon.

  2. Omaha’s Mount Vernon Gardens

    James Hill, Architectural Historian, National Parks Service

    Hill will share the details and history of Mount Vernon Gardens including a scale model reproduction of the original gardens at Mount Vernon.

  3. Effects of Development on Historic Neighborhoods

    Group Discussion:
    Marty Shukert, FAICP, RDG Planning and Design
    Bob Blair, Urban Studies Director and Associate Professor, University of Nebraska at Omaha
    Jeff Johnson, Urban Planner, HDR

    These three presenters will lead a spirited discussion about the effects of development on historic neighborhoods and share insights from their experiences as urban planners.

  4. Window Repair: Re-glazing Windows

    Don Browers, The Old House Mechanic

    Browers will demonstrate the materials, tools and techniques to replace broken glass and re-glaze older and historic windows.

  5. Window and Weather Stripping

    Tim Christiansen, Craftsman

    Christiansen will demonstrate techniques used to prepare your historic home for Nebraska’s seasonal changes.
